What is watch time?
Watch time is the number of minutes someone was actually present in a session, as opposed to whether they joined at all. Added up across attendees, it shows how much attention a session really earned.
How to calculate watch time
For each attendee, add up the minutes between each join and leave. Sum across attendees for total watch time, or divide by the number of attendees for average watch time:
Average watch time = total minutes attended ÷ number of attendees
Watch time vs attendance
Attendance counts heads; watch time counts attention. A session with 200 attendees who stayed 8 minutes each earned less attention than one with 120 attendees who stayed for 40, even though it looks bigger in a report.
Webinar engagement metrics beyond watch time
- Retention curve: how the audience changed minute by minute.
- Show-up rate: the share of registrations who attended.
- Questions, chat messages and poll answers per attendee.
- Follow-up actions: replays watched, links clicked, meetings booked.
Using watch time
Watch time per attendee is the basis for meaningful engagement segments: someone who stayed 50 minutes and asked a question needs a different follow-up from someone who left after five. Virtual Event Management Suite segments attendees by what they actually attended.
