What is skill coverage?
Skill coverage is how many people in a team hold a given skill at the required level. A coverage of one means a single person holds it, which is a key-person risk: the work stops when they are away or leave.
How to measure skill coverage
From the skill matrix, count for each skill how many people meet the required level. Skills coverage in a team is best shown as a heatmap, with skills down the side, coverage across, and anything at one or zero flagged.
Coverage and the bus factor
Software teams call the same idea the bus factor: the number of people who would have to be unavailable before a project stalls. A bus factor of one on billing, deployments or a key customer relationship is a business risk, not just an inconvenience.
Building a cross-training plan
- Rank skills by the impact if their only holder left tomorrow.
- Pair the holder with one learner on real work, not just documentation.
- Assess the learner and record the new level, so coverage visibly rises.
- Aim for at least two people at the required level on every critical skill.
Seeing coverage
Personalized Learning Platform for Corporations shows team coverage and flags where a capability rests on one person, which is the gap that hurts most when that person is on holiday or leaves.
