Readiness assessment: steps and a checklist before the audit

What is a readiness assessment?

A readiness assessment is a rehearsal of an audit: a review of your controls, policies and evidence against a framework such as SOC 2, done before the real audit so gaps can be fixed while it is still cheap.

Readiness assessment steps

  • Choose the framework and scope, such as SOC 2 security plus availability.
  • List the controls the framework expects and the ones you already run.
  • Check each control for a written policy, an owner and evidence that it operates.
  • Record the gaps, fix them in order of risk, and check again.

Readiness assessment vs audit

An audit produces a formal opinion that customers rely on, and the auditor must stay independent. A readiness assessment has no such constraints: it is a compliance gap analysis you can run yourself or with an adviser, as often as you like, and its findings are for you alone.

A SOC 2 readiness checklist

  • Policies written, approved and acknowledged by staff.
  • Multi-factor authentication on every critical system.
  • A joiner, mover and leaver process with evidence.
  • Code review and change approval recorded.
  • A vendor list with risk reviews.
  • An incident response plan that has been tested.

An audit readiness score

A score turns the checklist into a trend you can watch. Compliance as a Service for SMBs shows a weighted readiness score per framework that moves as evidence lands, and a readiness report listing the controls behind it, so the conversation with the auditor starts from the gaps.
