Sales velocity: formula, example and how to improve it

What is sales velocity?

Sales velocity is how quickly a pipeline turns into revenue: the value a team closes per day, given how many deals it works, how large they are, how many it wins and how long they take.

Sales velocity formula

The common formula combines four levers:

Sales velocity = (open opportunities × average deal value × win rate) ÷ sales cycle length in days

The answer is revenue per day. That is how to calculate sales velocity for a whole team; each lever also tells you where to work.

Sales velocity example

A team with 40 open opportunities, an average deal of $8,000, a 25% win rate and a 60-day sales cycle has a velocity of (40 × 8,000 × 0.25) ÷ 60, about $1,333 a day or roughly $40,000 a month.

How to increase sales velocity

Each lever moves the result in proportion, so pull the cheapest one. Shortening the cycle from 60 to 45 days raises velocity by a third, the same as adding a third more opportunities, and is often easier: most cycles are long because deals wait, not because buyers deliberate.

Sales velocity by stage

A single number hides where the time goes. Sales CRM and Pipeline measures velocity as the median days a won deal spent in each stage, so a slow Proposal stage stands out instead of being averaged into one cycle length.
