What is completion rate in training?
Completion rate is the share of assigned learning that people actually finish. If 50 people are assigned a course and 35 finish it, the completion rate is 70%.
Course completion rate formula
Measure it per course and per period:
Completion rate = learners who completed ÷ learners assigned × 100
Leave out people who left the company during the period, or the rate will look worse than it is.
What is a good completion rate for eLearning?
Mandatory training usually reaches high completion because someone chases it; voluntary courses often finish far lower. Rather than chasing a universal number, compare similar courses with each other and watch where in a course people stop.
How to improve completion rates
- Shorten paths: low completion usually means a path was too long, not that learners were unmotivated.
- Let people skip modules they can pass an assessment for.
- Put prerequisites in place so modules never feel impossible.
- Show each learner why the path matters for their role.
Completion rate vs pass rate
Completion says people reached the end; pass rate says they met the standard on the assessment. A course with high completion and a low pass rate is easy to click through and hard to learn from. Personalized Learning Platform for Corporations shows completion, time to competency and the modules where learners stall.
